CHAPTER ELEVEN

Aftermath

Hours later, Grizzle opened his eyes. He looked around and realized he was in his own bed. Well, that was good; they must have defeated Miskrull! The thought of Miskrull immediately alarmed him. He sat straight up.

“Oh good; you’re awake. Do you feel ok,” Anna asked, as she walked into the room. She sat next to him on the bed and laid her hand on his arm, as she waited for him to collect his thoughts.

“Grundel?” he asked.

“He's fine,” she said with a reassuring smile.

“Jabaal and Anwar?”

“They're fine too. Everyone is fine. You and your father suffered the worst of it.” It was odd to her that he had asked about his friends before his father. He and his friends shared a much stronger bond than she had realized until now.

Her words struck him like a hammer, as the memories of the battle flooded back to him. His father had been thrown across the room and smashed into a wall. “What’s wrong with the king,” he asked.

“His hand is still messed up pretty badly,” replied Anna. “They said his leg had been broken and he would have bled to death if your Halfling friend hadn't stopped the bleeding. Navaeh healed his leg during the battle. I haven't heard if she has been able to heal his hand or not.”

“She will heal it. I have seen her reattach a severed arm. Healing a hand will be easy enough.”

Anna threw her arms around him then, her emotions breaking all at once. During the attack, nothing had seemed real, and she hadn't even known her husband and son were fighting the demon. Then when she finally found out that Grizzle was unconscious, she had thrown herself into watching him, hoping he would be alright. Navaeh had said he was fine, but it did little to ease her concern. Now he was, and the realization of the situation rolled over her like an avalanche.

Grizzle wrapped his arms around his wife. She wouldn't cry, but he knew this all had to be very hard for her. They had only had a short time together before he was exiled, and then this had happened. He couldn't imagine how he would feel at the possibility of losing her. He didn't think he would be able to restrain himself as well as she had.

“Why don't we go see how the king is doing,” he told her as he pulled away and looked up into her eyes. They were teary, but no tears ran down her face. He stood, and she followed him out of their home.

Every time they passed a dwarf in the tunnels, they cheered. Many even smacked Grizzle on the back. He heard shouts follow him, “The savior of the dwarves!” or “The one who killed Miskrull!”

“They all think I killed Miskrull,” he asked his wife, when they were nearly to the king’s chamber, and finally no one was around them.

“All of your friends said you did. They said they were doing everything they could just to keep him where he was, then you just came bursting out of his head.
